My jaw surgery – week1&2

I thought I would share my experience if nothing else to pass some time but more to assist anyone else who may be thinking of having a similar surgery or anyone going through the process. It is quite a process.

I had an underbite which could not be fixed with simple orthodontics alone. It meant that I had to have a triple jaw osteotomy. In basic English…they broke or rather cause a break with a small saw. They do this along the section of the jaw where the nerves lie. Because of this you will end up numb and trust me, that’s a good thing. But I digress… They broke my top jaw and moved it forward 5mm, my bottom jaw was moved back 6mm. Due to the fact that I didn’t have a strong chin, they broke that section of my jaw as well and moved it forward approximately 4mm. So I had all 3 breaks together.

Pre Opp
Stock up on protein/meal replacement shakes, milk, soups, smooth yogurts, straws. One piece advice that I only learned after the opp is that a thicker straw is a better option if you can find them. The thin straws will cause pressure to build in your face and when you are swollen that is not fun.
Try to pick up a bit of weight if you are not over weight because you are going to loose loads. I have lost 5 kgs in 2 weeks. I was not over weight so 5kgs is a lot.

Post Opp
Waking up from surgery was uncomfortable to say the least. There was blood in my mouth and nose and spitting it out was almost impossible. Luckily I was able to breath through one nostril…otherwise I may have panicked. These days they don’t wire you shut, they use elastics to keep the jaw still. This also means that you can open your mouth slightly so don’t stress too much, if you can’t breath through your nose after surgery, you will be able to breath through your mouth. The bleeding continues for about 24 hours, it is irritating but it passes.

You’ll have tape across your face to help put pressure on the incisions. You can take these off after 3 days. It is very sticky to take off, so what I did was get in a hot bath. Use a mirror. Normal soap is not strong enough to get the sticky plaster residue off, so I used dish washing liquid on a face cloth and gently rubbed it off in circular motions.

Sleeping can be difficult the first few days especially if your not used to sleeping head elevated on your back. Don’t worry…you’ll get used to it.

Swelling is quite intense for the first 5 days after surgery. I hated it, it was super uncomfortable. Ice packs will become your best friends. I started experiencing tingling at about day 4. It felt like pins and needles, kind if like the feeling you get after having an injection at the dentist when it starts to wear out. That’s just the nerves starting to repair itself. Quite normal. So don’t worry.

Keeping your mouth clean is difficult but necessary. I alternated between the antibacterial mouth wash the doctor gave me and warm salt water. The second week left my tongue feeling gross and it’s just one of those things I guess cause you can’t open your mouth to brush your tongue. The salt water helps rinse it clean.

Stitches start dissolving and coming loose during the second week. Super annoying because spitting them out is difficult when you can’t really open your mouth.

So that is where I am at now. My tongue feels gross, I’m dying for solid foods…in fact even soft food would be good right now but I’m stuck with liquids. After this I don’t ever wanna see another straw again. I still look a bit like a character from flubber with my chubby swollen face. I am going nuts not being able to have a conversation…I am a talkative person and the silence is killing me.

On the bright side I am starting to see shuttle differences in my appearance and that is exiting. My bite is perfect for the first time in my life. I have experienced little to no pain during recovery so far. I had no bruising thanks to my amazingly gentle maxillo facial surgeon. I have lost the stubborn weight i wanted to loose and a bit more. So all in all….it’s not terrible.

I absolutely love Stephen King…the man just knows how to right a story that gets me completely sucked in from the first paragraph. Why do I love these sorts of story’s…I guess it’s because they speak true to the fears we all have. But it’s written about a fictional character surrounded by the supernatural which works as a filter or haze between the believable and the not so believable. Which in turn allows you to look at the fears we all have from an outside perspective.

Or maybe Stephen King said it best… “The great appeal of horror fiction through the ages is that it serves as a rehearsal for our own deaths.”

Morbid…maybe…but so true. How many of you slow down to take a look at car accidents?….these stories are kind of like that…you can’t help wanting to sneak a morbid peak….or in this case reading on…it’s kind of like that.

It’s not for everyone…I know but this Genre intrigues me…keeps me enthralled, nose in the book, on the edge of my seat kind of stuff. Nothing a quant romance novel has ever or could ever do in quite the same way.

So Thankful

Yesterday I had things put into perspective for me again when I had to visit a customer’s store in the middle of Alexandra township.  Suddenly I was grateful for all the blessings I have been spoiled with.

For those of you who don’t know…Alexandra is a township literally across the road from Sandton. Yes…a highway separates the extremely wealthy from the bitterly poor.  Now while I am by no means extremely wealthy in the ways of money…at least not wealthy enough to live in Sandton…I live a very comfortable life in comparison to the poverty I saw in that township yesterday.  Don’t get me wrong, I was well aware of the fact that South Africa has a large portion of it’s population living in bad, poverty stricken conditions…and I have been to and help at certain center’s in townships before…so I am well aware.  But my trip yesterday was just a reminder of how lucky I am to have what I have.  And I guess the point of this blog is to give thanks for my blessings and in so doing get you to be thankful for yours.  Too often we are quick to complain…there are people who would give anything to have the comforts you have.

So today I am grateful for the pretty house I live in, with all it’s creature comforts and luxury’s.  For my car that gets me from A to B everyday without fail.  The fact that I am able to put food on the table everyday without too much of a struggle.  That I have easy access to running water and electricity.   Thankful that if I need health care I have access to the best of it.  Thankful for the smart office I get to go to and work at…for my job that allows me to have all of the above.  And while these material things are wonderful and I am spoiled in comparison to what some have…I am also thankful that I am rich in the way of family & Love.

Don’t take for granted what you have people…you have more than you think.  😉

Eggs

There has been a misconception that eating only egg whites is best, but go ahead and eat the whole thing. It tastes better, and half the protein is found in the yolk. Raw Almonds and Almond Butter

Not only are almonds good for your hair and skin, they’re also rich in magnesium and vitamin B2, which help calm nerves and combat stress. When you’re stressed out, cortisol is released in the body and causes weight gain. The B2 vitamin in almonds helps with that while boosting your energy levels.

Parmesan Cheese

It might sound too good to be true, but having a brick of Parmesan cheese around can be an asset to shedding pounds. Use a vegetable peeler and slice the Parmesan on whole-grain crackers. And it doesn’t only aid in building stronger bones! Parmesan is one of the most flavorful cheeses so you only need about a tablespoon (22 calories) for a satisfying snack.

Yogurt

A top belly-flattening favourite, yogurt is stacked with probiotics, bacteria that may help reduce the amount of fat your body absorbs. Pick a Greek yogurt over the regular kind.  Greek nonfat or low-fat versions contain only half as much sodium as regular yogurt — and no artificial sweeteners or preservatives.

10 Simple Rules to eating healthy & Kicking the fat trap

ImageSimple Rules of engagement…

Most eating plans will always throw you in the deep end by giving you an overload of calorie counting and food options, I’m not going to do that.  There are a few simple rules that I have found work if you stick to them religiously.  I’m am giving you this information because it is the basis to the way I keep to a healthy way of living and eating.  Grasp them and you won’t even need to follow a strict menu…you’ll have the basic knowledge to know what to eat when. 

Rule #1…Don’t starve yourself!

Starving your body will just cause it to store more fat than you’ll loose.  Our bodies are smart…we are built to be survivors…so if you put your body on rations it will store so that it has enough to live off of and keep you going.  If you are hungry…eat something.  Just make sure it’s not something unhealthy from the snack machine or greasy from a fast food joint.  😉

Rule #2…Learn to know the difference between hunger & thirst

I know it sounds ridiculous  but once you become more aware of it you’ll see how it changes your eating habits.  So if you start feeling a little hungry, try downing a big glass of water…wait 10 minutes and if you still feel hungry then by all means have something to eat.

Rule #3…Know the difference between emotional hunger and real hunger

Be more aware of your feelings…stress, sadness, anxiety can all cause us to eat for the sake of eating and we usually start craving comfort foods…eat an apple instead.  😉

Rule#4….Watch your portion sizes & Slow down

Use a smaller plate…it may seem silly but it’s no lie that the bigger the plate the more we feel the need to fill it.  And then we eat so fast that before our body is able to register that it’s full we have polished off every morsel.  Remember to eat slower…chew your food properly.  That way you  will be better equipped to stop eating when you feel full and not over do it.    

Rule #5…Become a Snacker

This does not mean that you can nibble all day on sweets and junk.  What I mean by this is quite simply eat smaller meals more frequently.  So instead of 3 big meals a day, rather eat 6 smaller ones.  Why is this beneficial…well quite simply it means that your blood sugar will be kept stable throughout the day and therefore you won’t go through highs and lows of hunger spikes.  😉  Plus it’s a super way of getting the lazy metabolism into overdrive.  Remember the first rule?…Don’t starve your body?…well, when you starve your body it stores and the opposite is true when feed your body constantly throughout the day.  Because your body is getting a constant supply of food it doesn’t have a need to store…so instead it burns.  Yay!  😉

Rule #6…Drink lots of water

Not only will your hair, skin and mind thank you…but your body will benefit greatly from it as well.  Your liver plays a huge role in how your body deals with waste and fat stores.  In order for it to get rid of impurities it needs water…simple.   So…6 to 8 glasses a day people, make it a habit.  😉

Rule  #7…No Carbs after 12

Carbohydrates are necessary…your body needs it for energy and it’s not a good thing to remove them from your diet completely.  The trick is to eat them earlier in the day so that your body has time to burn them as energy.  So…have some health bread in the morning with your breakfast and feel free to have a potato or some rice at lunch. 

Rule #8…Keep Supper Simple

Lean meat, chicken or fish with a side of veg.  That’s it.  I don’t know why people feel the need to complicate it…it really is that simple.  No carbs at night…but all other veg is free game.  Also try to have fish at least twice a week.

Rule #9…Cook Clean

Frying food in oil is bad for you.  It may be quicker but it definitely will not help that waistline.  Learn to cook your food clean.  If you must go for the frying option use spray n cook or no more than a tea spoon of olive oil.  Try to opt for grilling, boiling or steaming your food rather as much as possible.  

Rule #10…Not all fats are bad

We’ve had it drilled into our heads for century’s that fat is bad for us…and in most cases it is but there are fats that aid the body and they shouldn’t be completely erased from our diets.  Avo’s and oily fish like salmon, sardines and tuna are a great source of healthy fat and they can actually aid your body in burning fat and protect you from illness.

1 Day Detox

This is absolutely the easiest way to detox your body after over indulging.  😉  So it is also perfect for that after Christmas long weekend binge.

 

The first and most obvious step…Drink LOTS of Fluids!

1.  Drink water. To detox in one day, you need to drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water. This helps to hydrate the cells and tissues, which the body needs for good health. In addition to drinking water, you can also drink herbal teas to get the fluids you need. Drinking water also helps to flush toxins and impurities out of the body.  If you feel the need you may also have a bit of fruit juice.  😉

The Second step is pretty straight forward…

2.  Eat only Raw fruits & Veg.  It’s as simple as that.  No dairy, no sugar and no starchy carbs.  Give you’re digestive system clean food for the day and you’ll feel much better for it.

3.  Eliminate coffee, cigarettes, alcohol, refined sugars and fats from your diet.   Then after try to keep it up for as long as possible…none of these things are ever good for you.  😉

4.  The point is to eat light for the day to give your body a chance to repair itself.  This is by no means a starvation diet and it should only be done for a max of two days to cleanse.  .

5.  EXERCISE!  Yes…you didn’t think you were going to avoid that did you?  hehehe.   A vigorous aerobic or cardio workout will get the blood pumping and those nasty toxin out your system.   So go for a run or hit the gym for an aerobic session.  😀

My meals for the day will include the following…you can make up your own combinations.   🙂  Remember…lots of water in between, I have only added a few examples of when you should drink your water or green tea…but you should sip on water all day.

1 Glass of water before breakfast!

Breakfast

1 Medium sized apple and a handful of Raw Almonds.

A cup of Green tea

Mid morning Snack

Handfull of berries

A cup of Green tea

Lunch

Salad

A big glass of water

Mid afternoon Snack

Half a paw-paw with a squeeze of lemon juice.

A cup of Green tea

Supper

1 Glass of water before dinner time

Grilled Chicken Fillet with Steamed mixed Veg.

Magical Relationships – Day3

Imagine if you were the only person on Earth; you would have no desire to do anything.  What would be the point in creating a painting if no one could see it?  What would be the point in composing music if no one could hear it?  There would be no reason to move from one place to another because wherever you went would be the same as where you were…no one would be there.

It’s your contact and experiences with other people that gives your life joy, meaning and purpose.  Because of that, your relationships affect your life more than anything else.  To receive the life of your dreams, it’s vital that you understand how your relationships affect your life now, and how they are the most powerful channels for gratitude to start magically changing your life.

Gratitude makes relationships flourish.  As you increase your gratitude for any relationship, you magically receive an abundance of happiness and good things in that relationship.

Words are very powerful, so when you complain about any person you actually harm your life. It is your life that will suffer.  By the law of attraction whatever you think or say about another person, you bring to you.  This is the very reason why the greatest minds and teachers of the world have told us to be grateful.  They knew that for you to receive more in your life, for your life to magically increase, you have to be grateful for others just as they are.

Today’s magical practice is being grateful for people just as they are!  Even if all of your relationships are currently good, they will increase with more magnificence through this practice.   And with everything you find to be grateful for in each person you will see gratitude perform it’s breathtaking magic.

CHOOSE 3 OF YOUR CLOSEST RELATIONSHIPS to be grateful for.  Find a photograph of each of the three people you have chosen.  Sit down and think about the things you are most grateful for about each person.  What do you love most about the person, what are their best qualities?  Then write down the 5 things you are most grateful for.

Thank you, their name, for what?

Keep their photo’s somewhere you can see them for the rest of the day and remember what your thankful for every time you look at their photo.

I love that I can trust you with my life and my heart.  Your love has never faltered.   I love your energy and your determination.  I so admire your work ethic and your constant get up and go attitude.  You have the ability to make me laugh…at any moment…even when I’m sulking about something.  hehehe

I love your hugs!   I love that we can go anywhere in the world just the two of us and be perfectly content in each others company.  Our silent moments are never awkward.  Even after 11 years we never run out of things to talk about.

The Magic Rock – Day 2

Magic Practice 2 – Summary

The Magic Rock

1.  Repeat Steps one to three of Magic practice 1 – Count your blessings.  (write 10 reasons why you are grateful)

2.  Find a “Magic” Rock and put it by your bedside.

3.  Before going to sleep tonight, hold your magic rock in your hand and think of the best thing that happened to you today.

4.  Say the magic words, Thank you, for that moment or thing.

5.  Repeat the Magic Rock practice every night for the next 26 days.

In the beginning of working with these practices, it takes concentrated days in a row to make gratitude a habit.  Anything that reminds you to be grateful is helping you turn your life into gold, and that is exactly what this practice is about.

Lee Brower presented the gratitude rock practice in The Secret film and book, when he told us the story of the father of a dying child who used a gratitude rock to be grateful for his son’s health, and his son made a miraculous recovery.  Since then the magic rock has been a proven success with many people the world over, who have used it for money, healing & happiness.

First find a rock or stone.  Choose a small size that fits in the palm of your hand and that you can close your fingers around.  Choose a rock that is smooth, without sharp edges, not too weighty, and that feels really good in your hand when you hold it.

It can be any rock…from your garden, a riverbed, ocean or park.  You may even have a precious rock or stone already that you can use as your magic rock.

When you have found your Magic Rock, put it by your bedside, in a place where you will definitely see it when you go to bed.  Clear some space if necessary so that you can easily see your Magic Rock when you go to bed.

Tonight, just before you get into bed to go to sleep, pick up your Magic Rock, hold it in the palm of one hand, and close your fingers around it.  Think back carefully through all the good things that happened during the day, and find the best thing that happened that your’re grateful for.  Then say the magic words, thank you, for the best thing that happened.  And that’s it.

Every night for the next 26 days, follow the same Magic rock practice.

The Count Your Blessings & Magic Rock practices will ensure that you begin and end your days in a state of gratitude.

Positive-thinking

My list of 10 things I am most grateful for today….

1.  I am thankful that my ankle has healed nicely, because I am finally able to run again…able to walk normally again in all my beautiful high heels…sooo missed them.  😉

2.  I am grateful that I am at work and earning a salary today because it means that I am able to have the things I need and want.

3.  I am blessed today because of all the relationships as they make my life more meaningful.

4.  I am thankful for the holiday season, because it’s the happiest time of year for everybody…it also means that people start to wind down so stress levels are lower.  😉

5.  I am thankful for the rain, because it means that we are being blessed with an abundance of water to sustain us.

6.  I am blessed to have my pets…because they bring endless joy to my life.

7.  I am grateful for the fact that I have a roof over my head every night, food on the table and am surrounded by all the creature comforts I need.  And I spare a thought for those who don’t have all my blessings…I wish to send them blessings this Christmas season.

8.  I am thankful for my sight that I can see all the beauty that surrounds me daily.

9.  I am thankful that I can hear all the happy cheer of the season…listen to peoples stories and laugh with them.

10.  I am grateful for the opportunity to share all my blessings through this blog everyday!

28 Days to a happier Life

So I purchased a book called “The Magic” by the Secret a good couple months ago.  I had all the intention in the world to follow it’s teachings for the set 28 days and I started off really well…but life happened and I strayed off the beaten path.  Now that things are quiet at work I have decided to give it another go and actually follow through.

To keep me focused I thought blogging the daily teachings & sharing with you might keep me motivated and at the same time might help some of you to bring your most positive enlightened self into 2013 as well.  I don’t know about you but I certainly have nothing to loose & I know from experience that the things the Secret teaches do actually work, when you do it correctly.  So lets Dream, Believe & Achieve together over the next 28 Days!

MAGIC PRACTICE NUMBER  1  (Summary)

1.  First thing in the morning, make a list of ten blessings in your life you are grateful for.

2.  Write why you’re grateful for each blessing.

3.  Go back and read your list, either in your mind or out loud.  When you get to the end of each one, say the magic words, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, and feel the gratitude for that blessing as much as you can.

4.  Repeat every morning for the next 27 days.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS

You will have heard people say “Count your blessings”, and when you think about the things your grateful for, that exactly what you’re doing.  But what you may not have realized is that counting your blessings is on of the most powerful practices, and it will magically turn your whole life around.  When you are grateful for the things you have, no matter how small they may be, you will see those things instantly increase.

The flipside is that when we’re not counting our blessings, we can fall into the trap of unintentionally counting negative things.  We count negative things when we talk about the things we don’t have.  We count negative things wen we criticize or find fault with other people, when we complain about traffic, waiting in lines, delays, the government, not enough money or the weather.  When we count negative things they increase too, but on top of that, with every negative thing we count, we cancel out blessing that were on their way.

First thing in the morning, or as early in the day as you can, COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS.   You can write our your list by hand, type it on a computer, or use a special book or journal and keep all of your gratitude in one place.  Today you are going to make a simple list of 10 blessing in your life you are grateful for.

When you think about the reason why you’re grateful for a particular thing, person or situation, you will feel gratitude more deeply.  Remember that the magic of gratitude happens according to the degree of your feelings!

Here are some ideas for writing your list:

*  I am truly blessed to have     What?     , because     Why?      .

*  I am so happy and grateful for     What?     , because     Why?      .

My list of 10 that I am most thankful for…

1.  I am truly grateful for my Fiance Marcello, because he is my best friend, he knows me better than anyone else and still loves me endlessly despite of all my faults.   He has the ability to make me smile even when I feel like my world is ending…he is my light.  I am so thankful that the relationship we have shared for 11 years has gone from strength to strength and that we found a love that has yet to loose it’s original glow… butterfly’s and all.  My heart still skips a beat when see each other.

2.  I am blessed with the most amazing parents.  They are two of the most down to earth, caring and selfless people…and at the same time never a push over, which meant that they knew how to be like a friend when it counted and how to be a strict parent when necessary.  I am a better person for all they taught me and for all the times they said No.  😉  There were many of those times.  hehehe  They definitely raised a level headed, intelligent woman with good morals and manners.  Thanks to them I am not afraid to reach for the stars.

3.  I am grateful for all the creative talents God so graciously blessed me with, because those talents have always allowed me to express myself.  It’s allowed me to see the world differently to most…it keeps me grateful for the beauty that is life.

4.  I am so thankful for my health, because I know that without it everything else is worthless.  I am grateful for a strong healthy body and mind that I can be proud of .

5.  I am blessed with a handful of truly awesome friends, because they are true friends.   We only have love and respect for one another.

6.  I am grateful for my job and all the work, because it gives me the means to enjoy the comforts.  With it I am able to live a happy comfortable life.

7.  I am blessed to have a sister, because she has always been a constant in my life…we grew up and experienced much of the same things together.

8.  I am grateful for my extended family, because with them I gained new friends and a lot more love.  🙂

9.  I am thankful for the orthodontist & maxillo surgeon that have helped towards fixing my teeth, I’ve always had such a complex about my mouth and I am finally seeing the results I want  to see.  I’m grateful that I had the means to make it happen and for the fact that I am now more confident and happy for it.   I also have so much to still look forward to and be grateful for as the end result will be so worth it all!

10.  I am grateful for the beautiful Country I live in, because we have it all here…great weather, friendly people, some of the most beautiful attractions in the world, no serious natural disasters ..big plus, and a history that makes us interesting to the rest of the world.  For all we have overcome as South Africans…we are an AWESOME nation!

Ah….December

I don’t know about you but I am feeling the effects of this very busy year.  I am just exhausted but as much as I’d love to take off for a month and chill, for me it’s just not possible this year.  So for the first  year in about 4 years I am working through the December holiday period…it seemed like a really good idea at the time.  I figured since the office will be like a ghost town I would be able to go at my own pace and rather take some well deserved rest in February or March in the new year instead.

While work has definitely quietened down…it has certainly not helped my energy levels at all.  With less to do I now find I’m struggling  to get through the very boring and totally uneventful days of December.  :p   I’m starting to long for a summer road trip, the Cape Town beach’s…the sun and hell yeah even the wind I’d be cool with, vineyards & copious amounts of wine just for fun, seeing my family and that overall feeling of freedom and winding down for the year.  Sigh.  Alas…I  am here and trying to make the best of it all.

Keeping my mind on the fact that time does fly and Feb will be here in no time & with it my escape from  the beginning of the new year wind up…which I do believe will have all my colleagues spitting blood with jealousy when  they all have to stay behind and deal with the madness that the beginning of the year brings with it.

While I’m sure I am in the minority of people working this December ..myself and the other unlucky few will keep the economy running smoothly until everyone is back in January.  Then when the rest of you suckers have long forgotten your wonderful December holiday…I’ll be on my way to sun and sand and posting all my fantastic holiday pics to make you sour.  LOL!  Yeah…I’m totally jealous..I’m big enough to admit it.  hahaha
